FAQ

What makes ORCA hardware suitable for outdoor use?

ORCA hardware is designed to perform in outdoor environments, with materials and finishes selected to handle exposure to weather, temperature changes, and regular use. Patina and subtle surface changes are expected over time and are considered part of the natural character. You can read our material guide here.

What finishes are available for ORCA hardware?

ORCA hardware is available in three finishes: Raw Brass, Blackened Brass, and Worn Silver (stainless steel). All three are available across the full hardware range‚ including our gate handles, oversize pulls, slide bolts, hinges, cane bolts, and utility hooks.

Is ORCA hardware suitable for coastal or salt-air environments?

Yes. Both brass and stainless steel (Worn Silver) are well-suited to coastal environments. Stainless steel offers the highest corrosion resistance and is preferred for the most exposed coastal installations. Brass patinates more quickly in salt-air conditions, which accelerates the development of a warm, aged finish. Neither material will rust.

Can ORCA hardware be installed on metal gates as well as wood?

Yes. ORCA hardware is designed for wood gate installation and includes matching wood screws. For metal gates, use stainless steel machine screws of appropriate diameter with corresponding nuts or tapped holes. Avoid zinc-plated or uncoated steel fasteners, which can corrode at the fastener point and stain surrounding materials.

How should I clean and care for outdoor hardware finishes?

Outdoor hardware performs best when it’s cleaned with mild soap, water, and a soft cloth rather than abrasive pads or harsh chemicals. Strong cleaners can damage or strip finishes, so we recommend following ORCA’s care guidance for the specific material and allowing natural patina to develop. Learn more on our material guide here.
