1 gallon of wood patina on white background

A non-toxic and water soluble wood preservative that advances the natural silvering process of wood and provides lifetime protection outdoors. A one-time application stains untreated wood a beautiful weathered gray, softening the appearance of new fences, gates, furniture, garden structures, and saunas. An alternative to toxic wood sealants and stains, this garden-friendly wood preservative is harmless to people, plants, animals and soil, while providing protection against wood rot.

Packaged in shelf-stable powder form, simply mix only the amount needed with water. Easy application by sponge, spray, brush or by dipping.

Powder comes packaged in 1-gallon portions, each gallon providing coverage of 150-200 square feet of wood. All orders will come in one box regardless of order order size.

Warning: Test product first on a sample of your wood stock, as different species and stocks of wood respond with slightly different resulting colors. Leave the test sample outdoors for at least 48 hours; color will continue to develop over two weeks as the product interacts with the elements.

ORCA recommends application to Cedar and Redwood species commonly used for outdoor construction.

Environmentally friendly and VOC-free. Made in Canada.

FAQ

What is Earth Coat?

Earth Coat is a mineral-based slurry that creates a durable, breathable finish for interior and exterior surfaces. Made from natural mineral ingredients, it develops a rich, matte texture that allows substrates to breathe while aging beautifully over time.

What surfaces can Earth Coat be applied to?

Earth Coat can be applied directly to untreated, unsealed mineral substrates including: brick, CMU (concrete masonry units), concrete, cement plaster, stucco, natural stone, and other absorbent masonry surfaces. For previously painted, sealed, or treated surfaces, a compatible bonding primer is recommended before application.

Can Earth Coat be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes. Earth Coat is designed for both interior and exterior applications, making it suitable for garden walls, fireplaces, feature walls, facades, retaining walls, and other masonry surfaces.

Does Earth Coat work in humid or freezing climates?

Yes. Once fully cured, Earth Coat performs well across a range of climates, including humid and freeze-thaw environments. Because it is vapor permeable, it allows moisture to escape rather than becoming trapped behind the coating, helping support the long-term performance of mineral masonry substrates. For best results, apply only when air and surface temperatures are between 41°F and 93°F (5°C–34°C), and avoid application during rain or freezing conditions while the coating is curing.

Is a primer required?

No primer is needed for most unpainted, absorbent masonry surfaces such as brick, stone, concrete, or stucco. If the surface has previously been painted, sealed, or treated, we recommend applying a mineral-compatible bonding primer before Earth Coat.

How should I apply Earth Coat?

We recommend using a limestone brush for a textured and earthen finish. You may also use a roller or trowel. For more information around application, view our guide here.

What kind of finish does Earth Coat create?

Earth Coat creates a soft, mineral-rich matte finish with natural variation. It can be applied smoothly for a refined appearance or more heavily for a textured, timeworn character.

How do I mix the Earth Coat powder?

Slowly add water to the dry mix, making sure to not add too much water. The consistency of the finished Earth Coat should be slightly thicker than the consistency of a paint.

How much Earth Coat do I need?

5 Gallon | 32 lbs. will cover approximately 150 to 200 sq ft in 1 coat, depending on the desired thickness, application method, and the type of substrate.
